HAUSE FIELD GUIDE · REVIEWED 25 OCTOBER 2026
Start with the planned disturbance
The relevant question is which materials the proposed work will disturb. A whole-property description may be less useful than a room, material and planned activity. List the finishes, insulation or components already identified in a survey, and keep unsurveyed materials visibly separate.
Use evidence for the material decision
Health Canada advises professional asbestos testing before renovating where asbestos may be present. A photograph or building age does not provide a laboratory result. Keep the report’s material identifiers and locations with the scope so the work does not expand to unassessed materials by accident.
Ask about the local requirements
Work classifications, qualifications, notifications and verification requirements vary by jurisdiction and project. Ask the assessor which requirements apply and who is responsible for each. Do not copy a work classification from a different province into a contract without that check.
Keep the renovation handoff clear
Ask what areas can be handed to the next trade and what remains restricted or unassessed. Keep the assessment, scope changes, waste documentation and any required verification together. A completed asbestos work package is separate from the quality, permits and completion of the renovation itself.
The project questions are HAUSE planning prompts. Refer to the responsible authority and qualified provider for requirements that apply to your situation.
