HAUSE FIELD GUIDE · REVIEWED 25 OCTOBER 2026
Keep the identity precise
An older thermometer, switch or other device may need product-specific assessment. Keep its make or label information if it is already accessible. Do not assume that every silver liquid is mercury, or that a modern-looking product is mercury-free without reliable information.
Use local public health advice
Health Canada describes elemental mercury vapour as a concern after a spill and points to local public health advice for small spills. A web enquiry cannot determine the amount present, air concentration or exposure. For immediate danger or urgent exposure, seek emergency assistance.
Map known movement
Record the original location and any known movement of contents, equipment or people afterwards. Include the surface types and inaccessible cracks or voids in the brief. Use “unknown” for missing details rather than reconstructing events as fact.
Ask for the decision evidence
Discuss how the assessor will define the affected area, what the quote includes and what information will support the completion decision. Waste handling, equipment use and any follow-up should be clear. Do not accept a promise of complete vapour elimination without a defined assessment and verification basis.
The project questions are HAUSE planning prompts. Refer to the responsible authority and qualified provider for requirements that apply to your situation.
